Do you want to go camping in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park? Maybe you’ll come to get away from it all or for the ghost stories.
We’ve traveled and camped here in the van in the winter and spring. Just a heads-up, the summer might be too hot to camp.
Did we run into any ghosts? I’m not sure, but we still had a great time under the stars!
Although we’ve stayed in different places in the Anza-Borrego desert, I’ll discuss one of the private RV parks in this blog post.
And you might want to check out when we camped in the state-run campground in a van. You have a few options in this beautiful park!
Palm Canyon Resort
We learned our mistake from a previous trip to leave early and arrive early. Plus, we made reservations ahead of time—another mistake we corrected.
We live and we learn. Right?
In the spring, we booked a spot at a private RV park in the Anza-Borrego Desert. We traveled in the van, and on this trip, we caught some Hollywood action.
Filming trucks and trailers filled the place. We wondered what was going on. Who was out in the middle of the desert filming?
You’ll want to read my blog post to find out who was out there. I actually thought it was funny… we wanted to get away from all the excitement.
Lo and behold, you can never go too far.
I guess we weren’t the only ones wanting to see the stars in the desert. Now, the same thing may or may not happen while you’re in the resort, but you’re bound to see a beautiful night sky.
So if you don’t want to go van camping in Anza-Borrego, or stay in an RV, you can book a room. There is no tent camping there.
We came at the end of spring, and a lady working at the resort told us they would close soon. The season ended in June, and the staff would leave.
In October, they’d reopen for the cooler months.
Where was everyone?
Besides the filming crew, we were the last campers to stay there during the open season. We enjoyed the clean, quiet atmosphere without the crowds.
When we arrived that evening, the cool air drifted in. But the sun scorched the land the following day, and we didn’t have a shaded spot.
So we pulled out the awning on the van, and the fierce winds whipped it up and almost ripped it off!
That didn’t go well…
Thankfully, the empty bathrooms had no line and no wait.
The ceiling fans inside squealed and echoed against the quiet outdoors. I checked the showers and stalls.
Twice.
I ingest too much scary stuff… I know.
This RV park is nice and safe. You’ll surround yourself with sweet, twinkling lights.
The stars lit up the desert sky at night, and I’m not talking about the movie stars filming there. You won’t see this many stars in the sky, or any at all, living in the city.
The next day, while driving around Anza-Borrego, we checked out Borrego Palm Canyon Campground. We stayed here during our first trip.
The campground was packed!
Many tent campers picnicked and hung out in the heat. I didn’t expect to see so many people outside in these conditions.
Overall, I’d go van camping in either the state campground or Palm Canyon Resort. But, the RV park has a cute Western theme, a convenience store, and other amenities that Borrego Palm Canyon does not have.
We also visited Slab City, which is about an hour away. You’ll want to check out my blog post about when we visited.
Have you been camping in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park? Which places do you recommend?
Did you run into any ghosts? I would love to hear your stories!
