I met a world traveler named Hans, who moved to the US. He met a beautiful woman through a dating site.
Yeah! But… not so fast… his story does not end well.
Online dating gone wrong
Some people might be scared to meet people online for the first time. Many strangers will look at your profile and even send you messages.
Who’s at the other end of that message?
The people you meet online may not act the same in person. And if you come from another country, you might find cultural differences.
What you say or mean to say could get lost in translation.
And some people might just want to take things to another level…
People I meet love to tell me their stories, and this one scared me.
Hans told me about the first time he tried online dating. He didn’t know much about it and thought people told the truth in their profiles.
Well… shouldn’t they?
He felt a little lonely
After many months of applying for jobs, Hans finally landed his dream job in the US. He had traveled here many times before, so he knew what to expect.
Packing up all his cherished belongings, he moved from his beautiful cottage in Austria to California.
California has some stunning scenery, but where he comes from is… breathtaking!
If you’ve traveled to Europe, you’ll know what I’m talking about.
But, after a few months, the thrill of living in sunny California wore off. He began to feel unhappy, lonely, and unfulfilled.
Although he had friends at work, he wanted something more.
Hans played sports at the beach and searched for a companion. He hung out in cafes and bars, took long walks, and traveled.
And nothing.
Co-workers gave him advice, but nothing worked. Dating culture in the US seemed so complicated to him.
Then, someone told him to try online dating.
But another co-worker told him about a bad experience that made him uneasy. Despite the bad stuff he heard, he looked into it.
It was worth a try
Hans created a profile with a dating site and added some of his best pictures. He sent messages to many women, and ‘liked’ their profiles and pictures.
But no one answered…
After using the site for a few weeks, he was crushed.
When he almost deleted his profile, he got a “like” from a woman named Claudia. Her dark hair and exotic features allured him.
Soon, they began texting and talking on the phone.
Hans smiled with excitement!
He loved speaking to Claudia. She made him laugh, and he found her charming.
Online dating was a success!
Dream come true
Then, the day that they would meet finally came. Hans met Claudia at a cafe on a Friday evening and she looked way more beautiful in person.
They ordered food and talked for hours.
After their meeting, they went their separate ways. Hans wanted to meet Claudia again, so he texted her as soon as he got home.
They made plans to meet again.
They found themselves chatting on the phone and messaging each other every day.
In the following weeks, they spent every weekend together. They played volleyball at the beach, took walks, dined out, and watched movies at Hans’ house.
It was a dream come true!
Or was it?
One weekend, Hans hoped to impress Claudia and cook dinner. He wanted to show her the special things he would do just for her.
Claudia came over and ate schnitzel and other tasty treats. After dinner, they talked for hours, as they had been doing.
Hans joked about European food being better than American food. Then Claudia got up and walked out the door.
Ok… that’s strange.
Claudia went missing for three days and he didn’t hear from her. Then she called, as if nothing happened the other night.
This puzzled Hans.
Anyway, they talked about meeting up again. In no time, they returned to hanging out on the weekends.
A strange pattern went on for a few months.
Claudia and Hans spent time together, and then she would suddenly snap. Hans didn’t understand her moods and grew weary.
Dream turns into nightmare
IHans finally decided he was better off without Claudia. But she thought otherwise. She wouldn’t let him go that easily.
