One thing we like to do in Southwest Michigan is to walk in nature. And the place we like to go is the Riverfront Trail in Niles.
It’s a scenic stroll along the St. Joseph River, and you could go for miles. But it’s a nice place to relax and hang out.
I’ll share what to know before going, what to expect, and tips.
Getting to Riverfront Trail
We access the trail at Riverfront Park in Niles, Michigan. So we take M-51 South to right on Wayne Street. Then we turn left on Front Street/Old 31 South.
There are other places to access it, but here we find paved parking.
By the way, it’s close by Wonderland Cinema (now called Moore Theatres), and this is where we used to watch movies at a very low price.
What to Know Before Walking Riverfront Trail
You can pretty much access this trail at any time, but I’d recommend going on it when there is daylight.
This area is right by historic downtown Niles. Here you’ll find family-owned businesses, dining, and shopping.
What’s Along the Trail
Riverfront Trail is paved and along the St. Joseph River. Actually, we see people boating on the river, and there’s a boat dock in this area.
You’ll pass a few parks, and there are plenty of benches where you can sit and rest and enjoy the view.
Plus, there are places where you can exercise, eat, and playgrounds for kids.
You’ll find a lot of people walking, running, biking, and walking their dogs. Sometimes we find people fishing, and there’s a bridge and dam to view.
In one area, we saw a lot of ducks and geese. There also were a couple of people who seemed to be living in their vehicles.
Access to Indiana Michigan River Valley Trail
When you’re on the Niles Riverfront Trail (sometimes called Riverwalk), you’ll have access to the Indiana Michigan River Valley Trail.
It’s a whopping 34 miles and goes from Niles, Michigan to Mishawaka, Indiana. I think this is going to be my goal one day.
We’ve walked this trail all the way to the YMCA, which seems to be our limit for now. But the last time we were on the trail, it started raining.
But walking along the river, you can go through parts that seem more forest-like too.
Travel Notes
I think the best time to walk this trail is when it’s not too hot. During summer you might find more people on the trail.
But there are nice, pleasant days in the spring and fall. Especially in the fall, you’ll see the pretty yellow, orange, and brown hues as the seasons change.
We only walk the trail during the day. There is lighting on some of the path at night, but it’s safer when there’s daylight.
Is It Worth Walking Riverfront Trail?
I like going to Riverfront Trail because it’s relaxing and quiet. You can find pretty views, especially when the leaves turn colors in the fall.
As I mentioned, I’d like to walk (or bike) all the way to Mishawaka. I’m sure it’ll take me more than one day, but at least I can scratch it off my list.
