We went van camping at Surf Outpost, and it was such a treat. We were perched high above and had amazing views of the ocean.

This area also has miles of mountains and scenic trails. And it was a refreshing getaway that’s not far from the city.

I’ll tell you about our experience, what to know and expect, and share personal photos from our stay. You might want to check it out too.

Getting There

We drove down the PCH, otherwise known as the Pacific Coast Highway, or CA-1. This scenic stretch has beautiful ocean views.

It can also be very congested. We were on a short road trip and decided to stay in Malibu.  Although we live close by, we wanted to go van camping by the ocean.

If you want to avoid the traffic, you can come from the US-101 North. However, it’s not scenic.

Once we reached the RV park, it was perched on a hill right off the PCH. There was a vintage sign, and palm trees lined up the road.

Camping at Surf Outpost

We actually stayed here when it was changing ownership. It was once called Malibu Beach RV Park, and when we drive past, there are some old and new signs.

They’re open year-round from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. If you need to check in late, let them know ahead of time.

This place makes a relaxing getaway close to the city, but it feels like you’re far away up on that hill.

Checking In

When we arrived, we had not made a reservation. We thought we’d stop by to see if we could stay.

There are lanes where you can park outside of the office. A man ran out and asked if we had a reservation.

After he checked availability, he gave us some options. He said the rates were lower in winter than during the warmer months.

So, we thought we were getting a deal after he said that. It’s not cheap to camp here, but you will have beautiful views.

Camping Spots

After paying for our spot, we backed into our site. We have a narrow rig, so we had just enough space.

I unfolded our camping chairs next to the van. We had a picnic table, but unpacked our table as well.

A family in a van rental pulled into the space right next to us. It was much smaller than our van, and they had a whole family in there.

Vehicle camping is on the first or second level. Our spot was on the lower level, and we walked up to the top to check out the views.

We found people tent camping and hanging out. So, that’s an option if you don’t do vehicle camping.

It was a holiday weekend, and there weren’t many people up there. But the area looked pretty spacious.

RV Park Amenities

The RV park had everything we needed for a decent stay. There were large, clean bathrooms. Thankfully, the showers had a good, steady stream of hot water.

There were two bathrooms on our level, and I never had to wait in line. There was also a bathroom on the higher level near the tents.

I kept running into the same lady in the bathroom wearing a soft, comfy robe. Great idea!

This inspired me to get one for travel and keep it in our Sprinter van. Now I use it when van camping glamping.

They also have a small laundry room, but we didn’t use it.

The office also has a little convenience store where you can buy camping supplies and food. We bought juice at a decent price.

Beautiful Ocean Views

What I liked most about this place was the scenery. During the day and at sunset, the rays reflect off the ocean, shimmering.

People around us watched the sun sink over the Pacific Ocean. How pretty!

We didn’t pay for an ocean or premium view, but we still caught the views from our camping spot.

The man checking us in told us no one had booked that spot across from us, which blocked the ocean view. Yeah!

The ocean crashing against the shore was soothing. But with the highway right there, you may also hear cars zooming by.

During our stay, live musicians played in the evening. We didn’t attend the event but heard music from our spot.

Places Nearby

The good thing about staying here is that it’s close to many of the nearby beaches in the area. Zuma Beach is one of our favorites!

If you’re more of a hiker, Malibu has many trails. You can even hike on a trail right from the RV park.

We saw people taking a trail down to Malibu Seafood. It’ll only take a couple of minutes to walk to the restaurant.

If you need to stock up on groceries, you can head north on the PCH. You’ll find a village with many family-owned stores, chain grocery stores, and beach shops.

Travel Notes

You might want to book ahead if you want to stay here. When we arrived, we got lucky, but I can see how they get booked out.

If they are booked out, you can call the office to see if there is an opening. There’s usually someone answering the phone until late.

Our camping site didn’t have extra space to set up many things. However, it felt safe staying there.

Final Thoughts

We enjoyed our stay at Surf Outpost. There was so much in the area to keep us busy, and the days flew by!

I look forward to returning to do more van camping and hiking. Or just sitting around and admiring the views might be good enough.
