While on a road trip in California, we stayed in Oceanside Harbor. We needed somewhere to park and ended up van camping in the overnight parking lot.
So if you’re on the I-5 between San Diego and Dana Point, you could check it out. With the limited camping options in the area, this worked out.
I’ll tell you about our experience, what to know and expect, and share some personal photos. You might end up there and see some of the ocean views too!
Getting There

We were coming from San Diego and took the I-5 North. Then we exited off W. Oceanside Harbor Drive.
Then you can follow the signs, which we didn’t see. It was late when we got there.
By the way, now I’ll touch upon the limited parking off the I-5, which is why we ended up here.
Outside of San Diego, we had stopped at a Denny’s and thought about staying there. But there were No Overnight Parking signs in their lot.
Then we left and looked for Flying J’s or Love’s and saw none on the I-5.

We drove down side streets and they were packed with semi-trucks. We passed some rest stops, but those were packed.
And the nearest Walmart had ended overnight parking. There was also no Bass Pro Shop or Cracker Barrel in the area.
All the campgrounds we stopped at were booked out except for one. But they wanted a whopping $300 a night!
For that price, we might as well stay in a hotel! So, we continued digging deep online and found out about Oceanside Harbor.
Staying at Oceanside Harbor

This area has a few restaurants, stores, and parking lots. Many people come to dine and hang out during the day and night.
So, we drove around looking for the overnight lots. By the time we found them, it was close to midnight.
The big clue was that we saw some other vehicles there, including RVs, vans, semi-trucks, and cars.
Overnight Parking Lots

The harbor has two parking lots where you can sleep overnight. Be sure to read the signs and follow the rules.
We parked in Lot 11-B, which allowed overnight parking. You’ll see a machine where you can pay. We paid around $10 to stay the night.

There was another parking lot next to us. According to the sign, you can park overnight in Lot 12 from September 16 to May 14.
Don’t pitch a tent or start a fire. We kept all our “van camping” inside the vehicle.
Remember, this is not a campground. You can stay in the parking lot for up to five days.
Facilities

If you have a vehicle with a bathroom, you’re good to go. We have one in our camper van, but it’s small.
So, I checked out the public facilities. The bathrooms appeared to be open all night, but weren’t very clean.
A guy lingered around them, eyeing people from under his hoodie. Other than that, the area seemed okay.
You won’t find any hookups for electricity or water here. We had a lot of bottled water in our van though.
Security

At times, it got loud at night as trucks pulled in and engines started. It seemed to get busy in the early morning.
We parked under a lamp, so the light shined on our van. The night we stayed, no security or police patrolling the area.
We would peek through the blinds every so often to see what was going on outside. It was just people pulling in and sleeping in their cars.
When traveling and parking in unfamiliar areas, it’s a good idea to keep an eye out. Stay aware of your surroundings.
Pretty Ocean Views

Despite the hectic evening, the sounds of waves crashing against the shore soothed my weary soul to sleep.
In the morning, the ocean views were beautiful. Crisp ocean breezes whipped around as seals barked nearby.

Golden sun rays peeked through the clouds as more cars filled the parking lot. People rode bicycles on the boardwalk.

We took a stroll around the harbor and saw people walking along the shore and fishing. What a wonderful place to relax!
Many RVs and van campers looked like they had been staying for a while. It’d be nice to return and hang out at the beach more.
Harbor Pelican Deli

If you are hungry in the morning, a small deli serves coffee and snacks. They also sell fresh fish.
You can sit in the outdoor seating area and enjoy the view amid docked boats rocking in the water.
Travel Notes

We stayed during the cooler months. I’m sure finding a spot during the summer might be tricky.
I’ve visited this harbor before in the dead of winter, and it was really cold and rainy. So, the summer would give you more pleasant weather.
If you’re driving around and need a place to pull over and sleep, this may work for you. Remember, it’s not a campground, so don’t expect anything more than a beach parking lot.
Final Thoughts
We were lucky to discover overnight parking in Oceanside Harbor on our road trip. With the limited options on the I-5, this came as a pleasant surprise.
Overall, it wasn’t bad, and I’d like to return. It was a lovely front-row seat to the Pacific Ocean.
