We drove from the West Coast to southwest Michigan. We passed many towns and ended up visiting Dowagiac.
Well, we stayed there a while and discovered the nature and things to do. This might be a little area in the Midwest, but it’s rich in history.
I’ll tell you about our experience, what to know and expect, and share some personal photos too. You might want to get away from it all and check it out!
Getting There

On our long road trip from California to the Midwest, we traveled about 2,500 miles. We went to Dowagiac and nearby cities to visit relatives.
Now this took multiple days, as we made many stops and explored along the way. But it was a fun drive through different landscapes.
To reach this town, we headed east on the I-94 from Chicago. It’s located in the Tri-State area.
This includes Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana. Dowagiac is near the Indiana state line.
Visiting Dowagiac
This town might not be on your radar unless you know people here or you have specific business to take care of.
The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians has its headquarters here. Dowagiac means “fishing water,” and is pronounced DOW-WAA-JAK.
It’s no surprise since many small lakes dot the area. But there’s more than just bodies of water.
Relaxing and Unwinding

If you live in a big city, you’ll find that Dowagiac has a much slower pace. It’s about a two-hour drive from Chicago.
Life is pretty slow here, and we found it relaxing. We just kicked up our feet and explored the area.
It seems pretty safe, as we didn’t notice anything too alarming.
The town has a laid-back mid-American feel. There’s no sitting in traffic getting from one side of town to the other.
Camping in Nature

We found ourselves surrounded by nature, and if you like the great outdoors, you’re in luck.
Camping here, we felt like it was off the grid. Well, not totally off the grid…just somewhat.
You’ll still have the amenities of grocery stores and gas stations nearby. But it’s a nice, quiet place.

There are a couple of places to camp in nearby areas. We van camped on private property, and this was right after we finished the conversion.
With all the tall pine trees and lush land, it felt nice. The birds sang, and crickets chirped in the summer breezes.
We didn’t go here, but Butler Tree Farm & Campground seems to havesecluded sites and cabins.
Historic Downtown

We like to walk through the historic downtown area. You might notice the preserved history and maintained buildings.
The train station, post office, library, and theater are clean and kept up. On my last visit, I was doing some writing in the newly remodeled library.

You can learn more about the town, along with Southwest Michigan, as they have many books there.
Along with the large collection of resources to browse, there are many places to study and work, plus they have Internet.

We went to the mom-and-pop shops that line the downtown area. We looked at souvenirs and saw a legit bakery.
There was also a flower shop and a pharmacy. They also have a clothing store and a shoe repair shop.
I ate at some of the restaurants down there. You can pick up a homemade pizza or dine out. If fast food is your thing, they have that too.

You could even stay in the heart of downtown at the historic 1870 House for the complete experience.
By the way, for more shopping, we head to South Bend, Indiana. It’s about 30 minutes away and they have a mall, retail stores, and restaurants. I’ve also stayed in this area as well.
Small Lakes

Dowagiac has a lot of little lakes, and you can spend a day by the water. There are places to fish or sit out in a boat.
We’ve been to James Heddon Park a lot, but I want to call this a pond.
Last time I saw two kids throw their fishing lines out at the water’s edge. Small ripples blurred the reflection of trees that stood around the pond.
Some people sat in their cars sipping on ‘pops’ or sodas, enjoying the view. Either way, there was plenty of free parking and no crowds.

As the sun sank into the horizon, mosquitoes attacked me. If you attract them like I do, wear bug spray here.
You can also find lakes in or near Cass County and Sister Lakes. I’ve actually gone water skiing at the latter.
But make sure you look for public lakes. There are many private ones you can’t access.
If you want to dip your toes in Lake Michigan, it’s not too far away. You can check out my post on Silver Beach.
Walking and Hiking

We like to hike and walk, and the area has many places in nature. It’s ideal during the milder months of spring, summer, and fall.
It typically snows in the winter, and sometimes a lot. Hey, you could throw on those boots and go for it!
Besides walking downtown or at the high school track, we’ve gone to Russom Park. A long paved trail winds around an open field with soccer goals.
During sunset or sunrise, the beautiful sky paints a golden hue. Isn’t that just pretty?

It’s been some years since I visited Dowagiac Woods Nature Sanctuary in Cass County. But you can walk through forest and swampland here and maybe even see a snake!
There is also Rudolphi Wildlife Refuge, where you can venture to a little lake.
If you drive to Niles, which is not too far, I like walking along the river at Riverfront Park. There are many other hiking trails in nearby cities.
Fun and Games

Okay, we weren’t in nature the whole time. We wanted to stir things up and check out the nightlife.
The Four Winds Casino sits at the edge of town. Over here, they have pretty good food and gambling.
Owned by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, this cute little casino never sleeps. Some people go to Dowagiac just for this.
Although I’m not a big gambler, I like to see where the locals hang out. I ate dinner while watching people play games and dance.

They also have locations in nearby cities with lodging. And we visited those casinos too. I even stayed at the South Bend branch for a few nights and loved it.
The Blue Chip Casino is another big casino in Indiana with live entertainment, hotel, and restaurants. We met many Chicago people hanging out here.
Don’t get too excited and blow all your money away!
Travel Notes
Our last visit was during the summer, and we had mild weather, not too hot or cold. However, summers can get very hot and humid.
During the winters, you can encounter lake-effect snow. That’s a lot of snowfall from Lake Michigan.
The perfect time of year would be in the spring or fall. My ragweed allergies flare in the fall, so that’s not a great time for me. But it’s very pretty with the orange, yellow, and brown leaves covering the ground.
Final Thoughts
We stayed in Dowagiac to visit people and relax. Although little, we found a few gems to keep us occupied.
Whether you connect with nature or play the slots, it’s clean and safe. Maybe you’ll stay for a while too!
